“THINKABOUTIT” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Wednesday; November 21, 2007
When you combine a holiday known for horse-play and a
professional athlete we would typically expect a result that
would end up either on the front page of a scandal sheet or on
some police blotter; yet, this story has a happy ending. Last
Halloween night, Jason Varitek, did something special. Rather
than giving out something that would rot out children’s teeth
and bring satisfaction for the moment, he gave them something
they could savor for a long, long time. Rather than handing out
candy for Halloween the captain and catcher for the World
Champion Boston Red Sox gave out autographs. He sat in his
driveway and as the kids came by he would autograph whatever
they had with them.
When we deal with children, it’s often easy to throw money and
things at them; but, what they really need is us. Jason Varitek
couldn’t develop a relationship with each child, so he gave them
the most personal thing he could – his name. What are we giving
the children with whom we can develop a personal relationship:
stuff or substance?
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ; this
is Charlie Wharton.
