“THINKABOUTIT” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Most
of the time, the Bible makes pretty good sense. Okay, now
that I have established that I have a firm grasp of the
obvious, let me make my point. While, typically, the Bible
is easily understood, every-once-in-a-while, it throws us a
curve. For example, what do you think Jesus meant when He
said, “… you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is
perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)? We all know we aren’t going to be
sinless, so what is Jesus trying to do by setting an
unattainable standard?
For years, I have been able to justify this passage in my
mind; but, the other day I came across an observation by
John Maxwell that put a different spin on it. In his book,
Developing The Leaders Around You, he wrote, “When
excellence is the standard, the best will hit the mark, and
the others will at least hit the board.” When it comes to
spiritual living, there won’t be any of us who will be
perfect; but, if that is the standard for which we strive,
we are bound to be better people than if we merely tried to
get by.
What’s our goal in life? How does that compare to what
Jesus had in mind for us?
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ;
