“THINKABOUTIT” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
In
1970, the country singer, Charley Pride had a big hit with,
“Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone”. In the song, Charley made
reference to an old saying in the lyric, “Sleeping under a
table in a roadside park, a man could wake up dead …”. In
this lament of a broken heart, we find an interesting
hyperbole – or is it?
Actually, unless we are alive to personally watch the second
coming of the Lord, that is exactly what will happen, we
will all wake up dead. Throughout the Bible we are told
that there will be a life after death. The apostle Paul
noted the surety of man’s resurrection when he wrote, “… in
a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet;
for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised
imperishable, and we shall be changed.” (I Corinthians
15:52).
The certainty of the resurrection is important; but, not as
pressing as the question, “Where will we spend it?” You
see, the same people who believed in an afterlife, believed
in an eternal reward and punishment. Are we ready to wake
up dead?
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ;
this is Charlie Wharton.
