Centuries
ago, the Old Testament prophet Elisha found himself
surrounded by the enemy. Rather than give up, Elisha prayed
that God would strike his adversaries blind (which He did),
then the prophet led them into a friendly stronghold where
they regained their sight just in time to see themselves
surrounded by their enemy. While the spoils of war would
have allowed Elisha’s order to have them killed, instead he
showed them kindness by feeding and freeing them. From that
moment on, Elisha didn’t have any trouble with the Arameans.
Have we ever wondered what the Bible meant when it records,
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”?
(Romans 12:21) The ability to overcome the urge for
retaliation is outlined in Elisha’s story when he prayed for
God’s power, relied upon his quick wit and repaid evil
intents with good actions.
Let’s be committed to taking the high road in dealing with
others. Retaliation is the result of an emotion-run-wild, a
good response is found in controlled mind and a pure heart.
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ;
