“THINKABOUTIT” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

In
a lesson on what has become known as the Lord’s Prayer, I
recently heard a preacher reference a writer by the name of
James Dunn who noted that one of the most frightening
requests that we as people can make is, “Father, forgive me
as I have forgiven others.” On paper the principle sounds
good; but, in reality, do we really feel confident standing
before God asking for the same measure of forgiveness we
have given others?
Forgiveness is an interesting attribute. We all know that
we need it (from our Awesome God as well as from our awful
neighbor); but, have we really make the correlation between
the forgiveness we give and the mercy we receive. Whether
it’s Divine in nature or just the day-to-day stuff among
friends, unless we are willing to forgive, we had better be
perfect.
While we should all strive to be the best we can be, at the
same time we’d also better be working our willingness to
show mercy. It’s easier to practice forgiveness (and much
more realistic) than it is to live without fault.
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ;
this is Charlie Wharton.
