“THINKABOUTIT” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

For people who live anywhere near a mighty river or a large
reservoir; one of the most distressing terms is “levee
break”. All along large waterways are a series of dams that
keep the power of the water at bay. Through proper
management, the life-threatening force remains docile.
Hundreds of years ago, a wise man noted a similarity between
levees and emotional restraint when he observed, “The
beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon
the quarrel before it breaks out.” (Proverbs 17:14) In his
lesson on life Solomon noted that when we allow people to
get to us, it is like a crack that develops in a dike.
Anger and quarrelling weaken our resistance to an internal
explosion and, if we keep it up long enough, we won’t be
able to hold our temper or our tongues. When that happens,
all the bitterness that had welled up inside us will spill
out and ruin not only others; but us as well.
Are we quarrelsome? Are we becoming angry? If so, let’s
deal with it now before we burst.
Think about it! For the Madison Avenue Church of Christ;
this is Charlie Wharton.
